Bold City Buzz — Week of July 13, 2026
This is the first Bold City Buzz. Every week we'll send one short note about the independent businesses that make Jacksonville worth living in — who's worth your Saturday, and who to call when the AC quits. No national chains, no general news, no filler.
First, what this is
Jax Locals is a directory of independent, locally-owned businesses in Jacksonville — and only those. No chains, no franchises, no pay-to-play. The Buzz is the weekly version: a few places worth knowing, and the people behind them.
We don’t do general Jacksonville news. Jacksonville Today already does that well, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. Our lane is narrower: the Bold City’s independents.
More than 80 new listings
The directory grew by more than 80 businesses over the past week, and most of them fill in a gap we’d been ignoring: the unglamorous stuff you actually need.
That means Jacksonville now has an independent-only answer for plumbers, electricians, AC, handymen, landscapers, cleaners, vets, dentists, chiropractors, accountants, and lawyers — 20 categories that were empty a week ago. Every one was checked by hand: no franchises, no agents of a national brand, no listings from the wrong side of town.
Who to call
This is the part we think is genuinely useful. When your water heater goes, the first page of Google is a wall of ad spend and franchise dispatch lines. Here’s the local alternative:
- Turner Plumbing — a locally owned plumber on Hendricks Avenue in San Marco.
- Weather Engineers — a long-established independent HVAC company on Edison Avenue in Riverside. Relevant in July.
- River City Veterinary Hospital — an independent animal hospital on Herschel Street in Avondale.
Worth your Saturday
- bb’s on Hendricks — the San Marco standby. Bistro menu, bakery case, always full.
- Blue Fish in the Shoppes of Avondale — seafood and a raw bar on St. Johns Avenue.
- Rusted: A Vintage Market on San Marco Boulevard — a rotating market of vintage, home goods, and local makers. Different stock every visit.
Three new guides
If you want the whole day planned:
- An Evening in San Marco Square — browse, vinyl, dinner, a beer. Park once.
- A Slow Day in Avondale — the Shoppes, the Park Street antique detour, a long dinner.
- Veteran-Owned Jacksonville — where to spend in a Navy town.
The veteran-owned list is short on purpose
This is a Navy town — NAS Jax on the Westside, Mayport at the north end of the Beaches. Plenty of the city’s independents are veteran-owned, and we only tag a business as veteran-owned after the owner tells us directly. Not from a decal, not from a review.
That means our veteran-owned list is shorter than the truth. Start with Hangar Bay Cafe up toward Mayport, and if you own one — or love one — tell us and we’ll add it.
Tell us who we’re missing
Listings are free, and always will be. There’s no login, no upsell, and no “premium placement” waiting behind a paywall. If your favorite independent isn’t in here, add it.
See you Thursday.
