Jacksonville is a Navy town and doesn’t pretend otherwise. NAS Jacksonville sits on the Westside; Naval Station Mayport anchors the north end of the Beaches. Sailors rotate through, a lot of them stay, and some of the best independent businesses in this city are run by people who served.

Hangar Bay Cafe & Gallery sits on the Atlantic Beach side, up toward Mayport — a veteran-owned cafe and gallery in the part of town where the naval station shapes the whole rhythm of the week. It’s the natural first stop on this list.

Coffee downtown

Urban Grind Coffee Company is a veteran-owned independent coffee shop in the Northbank core — the kind of place that makes downtown feel like a neighborhood instead of an office park. Good if you’re working, better if you’re not.

Lunch or dinner in San Marco

Basil Thai & Sushi is a veteran-owned kitchen on Hendricks Avenue in San Marco, an easy walk from the Square. Pair it with an evening in San Marco and you’ve got the whole night handled.

Athens Cafe is a veteran-owned spot in the San Jose–Lakewood stretch — the everyday middle of the city, where the restaurants aren’t trying to be a destination and are all the better for it.
