A Perfect Saturday at the Beaches
Surf shops, seafood off the dock, an independent bookstore, and a beer by the sand — how to spend a locals' Saturday across Jacksonville's Beaches.
The Beaches aren’t Jacksonville proper — they’re three small ocean towns with their own identity, and a Saturday out here feels like a different trip. Here’s a locals’ version, low on tourist traps and high on independents.
Morning: catch the surf scene
Start where the water is. Sunrise Surf Shop in Jacksonville Beach and Aqua East in Neptune Beach are the core shops — boards, wax, wetsuits, and people who actually know the breaks. Aqua East has been at it since 1973. Rent a board or just soak up the surf-town feel before the sand fills up.
Midday: a book and a bite
Wander into the Beaches Town Center, where Atlantic and Neptune meet. The BookMark has been the Beaches’ independent bookstore since 1990 and keeps a busy author-event calendar — grab something for the beach chair. When you’re hungry, TacoLu is the loud, beloved Baja-Mexican spot a short hop away on Beach Boulevard.
Afternoon: seafood off the dock
For the real thing, drive north to Mayport. Safe Harbor Seafood is a working-dock restaurant where the catch comes off the boats and onto the plate — order at the window and eat by the water while the shrimp boats come in.
Evening: a beer by the sand
End back in Jax Beach at Green Room Brewing, a surf-town institution pouring its own beer steps from the ocean. It’s the right way to close a Beaches Saturday — local all the way down.
