Twenty more, and six aisles finally full

We added twenty independents to Jax Locals this week, and the point wasn’t the number — it was filling in the categories that were too thin to be useful. Coffee, seafood, boutiques, barbershops, tattoo studios, and the makers all crossed the line where a list becomes a real answer.

Same rule as always: hand-checked, no chains, no franchises, and nobody from the wrong side of the river padding out a neighborhood they aren’t in. A few of the ones we looked at were fine businesses — just not inside the urban core and the Beaches, so they didn’t make it. That’s the whole discipline.

Start with coffee

Two blocks of Stockton Street in Riverside might be the best short walk in the city right now.

• Bold Bean Coffee Roasters — the Stockton Street flagship, and the roaster most locals name first when you ask about Jax coffee.
• Tiger Records — right up the block at 875 Stockton, new and used vinyl, different crates every visit. Coffee, then records. Park once.

Downtown got one too: Setlan Coffee Co. on North Laura Street is a real espresso program for the Northbank, which has needed one for years.

Out at the Beaches

If the plan is sand-then-food, this is the week for it:

• Jax Beach Boil Company — Lowcountry boil by the bag on 3rd Street North. Bibs on, phones down.
• Grouper Shack — the casual, few-blocks-off-the-sand fish spot you send visitors to when they want grouper without a fuss.
• Jaffi’s — a long-loved independent women’s boutique at Beaches Town Center, right on the Atlantic–Neptune line where First Street does its best local shopping.

Worth the browse

• Beau Outfitters — independent menswear on San Marco Boulevard, a real fitting-room conversation instead of the mall.
• Jacksonville Pottery Studio — one of the city’s go-to spots to actually get your hands in clay. The makers page is small on purpose, and studios like this are why it’s growing.

When you want the appointment

Tattoo studios are the category people research hardest, so we were picky. Three of the new ones:

• Black Hive Tattoo — Gilmore Street in Riverside, a short hop from Five Points, strong local following for custom work.
• Swan Tattoo — St. Johns Avenue in Avondale, tucked into the Shoppes, considered and clean.

And while you’re in Riverside: Believer Barbershop on Riverside Avenue is booked-solid for a reason.
